Blue Cohosh is noted for its estrogenic and antispasmodic properties. It has been used as an anthelmintic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, and vermifuge. In addition, it has been used for cholera morbus, colic, convulsions, cramps, dysmenorrhea, dyspepsia, leucorrhea, metrorrhagia, neuralgia, parturition, rheumatism, stomatitis, uteritis, uterine cramps and infections, and vaginitis. Considered primarily a female herb, it helps with speeding pregnancy delivery if the delay is due to fatigue, debility, or uterine nervous energy.
Homeopaths use blue cohosh tincture for after-delivery pains, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, intramammary pain, leucorrhea, metrorrhagia, neuralgia, pityriasis, rheumatism, threatened abortion, uterine spasms, and uterine atony.
Black Cohosh has been used for gynecopathy, uterine disorders, malaise, rheumatism, and sore throats. Black cohosh was also used as an alterative, antispasmodic, astringent, diaphoretic, emmenogague, nervone, sedative, stomachic, and tonic. It has been given to infants as a syrup for whooping cough, ringing ears, and chronic coughs.
Dioscorea, or yam, helps to regulate metabolism and control fertility. Dioscorea is a diosgenin yamogenin, providing the steroid building blocks for developing human sex hormones, and is used for an oral contraception, treating menopause, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual tension, and testicular deficiency.
Viburnum, or cramp bark, relaxes the peripheral nerves with somatic spasms rather than the autonomic nerves with visceral spasms. It is also an astringent used symptomatically in diarrhea, leucorrhea, spongy gums, and loose teeth. Viburnum has also been used as a nerve sedative and antispasmodic in cases of asthma and hysteria, as well as cramps, convulsions, lockjaw, and heart palpitations.
Damiana is a CNS depressant, stimulant, expectorant, diuretic, laxative, purgative, and tonic. It has been used as a folk remedy for impotence, nephrosis, orchitis, and spermatorrhea. Homeopaths use it for impotence, neurasthenia, and sterility.
